Where Electrical Panels Quietly Bleed Money

Most electrical projects don’t go over budget because of one big mistake. They bleed money in small, overlooked decisions.

After years in this industry, here’s where we consistently see panels get more expensive than they need to be:

1️⃣ Overspec’d Protection

Using larger breakers or components “just to be safe” sounds smart but it increases cost, takes up space, and can complicate coordination.  Smart protection beats oversized protection.

2️⃣ Cheap Terminations

Saving a few dollars on critical electrical devices often leads to loose connections, troubleshooting time, or worse … failures in the field.  Labor and callbacks cost far more than quality components. Make sure those components have modern connection systems.

3️⃣ Poor Layout Planning

A panel that looks fine on paper can be miserable to wire up.  Extra bends, tight spacing, and bad wire duct placement increase labor time … and labor is usually the most expensive part of the build. Take time for proper layout.

4️⃣ Ignoring Current Limitation

When fault energy isn’t properly controlled, you risk damage to downstream components.  The right protective devices can prevent expensive replacements and downtime.

 

The truth is this:

Material cost gets all the attention. Labor, rework, and service calls are what really move the needle.  Design smarter. Specify intentionally.  Build for serviceability.
